The police in Plateau state have said that a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Safwan Fade, has been attacked by a group of thugs and beaten to death.
According to the police, the incident happened at Pankshin local government area of the state, where a group of men stormed the stadium and attacked the corps member.
Fadec was said to be serving with the Federal University of Education in Pankshin.

Commissioner speaks on NYSC member killed in Plateau
Emmanuel Adesina, the commissioner of police in the state, disclosed to journalists at the force headquarters in Jos that the state capital arrested two male suspects in connection to the attack on the corps members. The suspects are Samuel Dang Kat and Zatshinen Wubwerwe.
Adesina said the incident happened on January 23, 2025, at about 7 am, adding that Umbule Boreng Reuben of Pankshin LGA reported the incident to the police. He added that the corps member was severely beaten and injured by unknown thugs at the Pankshin township stadium.
Attacks on corps member: doctors could not save him
The police boss then disclosed that he directed the DPO of the Pankshin division to lead a team of police officers to the scene where the victim was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Adesina's statement reads in part:
“The victim was treated and declared stable by the Medical Doctor on duty. The victim was later transferred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) as a result of some complications. The victim eventually died in the process."
He maintained that the two suspects were arrested during their investigation in connection with the attack. He noted that efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects and charge them in court.
Nasarawa man killed corps member
This came months after Timileyin Ajayi, a 32-year-old suspect in the murder case of Salome Adaidu, a corps member from Abuja, was remanded at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nasarawa State Police Command in Lafia, the north-central state capital.

In a confessional video, Ajayi narrated that Adaidu was his girlfriend who was cheating on him, and he felt bad about it. He added that he complained to her and she denied it at first. However, after bringing out the evidence, she admitted to cheating on him and apologised.
Many communities historically unreceptive to strangers - Expert
Youth development expert, Dipo Daniels, has called for urgent action to address the issue of violence and hostility towards outsiders in rural communities in the country.
Daniels, in chat with Legit.ng, posited that the tragic death of Safwan Fade points to the fact that many communities in Nigeria have historically been unreceptive to strangers, leading to mistreatment.
The youth mentor explained:
"This phenomenon is often rooted in a deep-seated mistrust and suspicion of outsiders, which can be exacerbated by cultural, ethnic, or socio-economic differences."
To address this issue, Daniels recommended a number of strategies, including cultural orientation programs, community engagement initiatives, and conflict resolution mechanisms.
As he put it:
"Constant reorientation by community leaders and educated individuals is a valuable strategy to address this issue."
The former general secretary of the Ondo State Youth Network further stressed the importance of regular evaluations and feedback from corps members, young people, host communities, and stakeholders to inform policy and program improvements.
He concluded:
"If these strategies are harnessed, we can work towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment for young people, particularly NYSC members, to serve and develop themselves.”
